Daredevil Issue 3 -
Daredevil sits in diner with Detective Cole North, attempting to persuade Cole to help him fight the Hand. Cole tells Daredevil he will think about it but with Daredevil’s heightened senses he can hear Cole’s heartbeat and knows he will not be helping. Leaving the diner Daredevil contemplates his next move, visiting Mayor Luke Cage.
The conversation between Daredevil and Cage does not go as Daredevil had hoped with Cage revealing he is going to be meeting with the Stromwyns. Daredevil, knowing how dangerous and ruthless the Stromwyns are, tails Cage to the meeting. The room is soundproofed but Daredevil can still hear the conversation. The Stromwyns attempt to bully Luke into giving in to them, to which he smashes the table before leaving. Daredevil in the hall becomes aware that something is wrong has to fight his way out.
After escaping from the Stromwyn’s building, Daredevil is attacked by an unknown attacker. Being highly trained and with his heightened senses Daredevil still stands no chance in the fight. Daredevil who the mysterious female is but is paralyzed with an acupuncture needle in his neck. She explains to Daredevil how they plan to keep him out of the fight, forcing Daredevil to begin gathering all those that he cares for and loves before they can be taken from him.
So Daredevil is a tricky devil for me to pin down. It is still early in the run and a lot has happened before Chip Zdarsky took over and is still playing out. If you don't mind not being filled in on the why as the story unfolds it isn’t unfollowable. Devils Reign and the last Daredevil arc are still very much present in the current story which continues without a hitch from one to the other. Zdarsky seems to have a plan with what is going to happen and how and I’m curious enough to keep reading for now. The art by Rafael De Latorre is superb. The emotion on the characters faces reads extremely well without dialogue and it’s pretty easy to get a feel for the mood of the characters. I think this one might be a keeper as far as the story goes and I think that anyone wanting to get into Daredevil before a lot happens with the story, now is the time. The first three issues, while I personally think that the first two issues where slightly a mess, is coming together to build an interesting story that I for one cannot wait to see what comes next.
The Amazing Spider-Man Issue 9 -
Perter Parker is standing by the buffet table as Wolverine approaches, commenting about the invitation and a light-hearted jab about the Spider suit for the occasion. Parker, however, is distracted by Mary Jane Watson. Parker attempts to talk with her but is brushed off abruptly, so he decides to mingle. Parker has several awkward conversations with other heroes at the Hellfire Gala. Cyper tells Parker that she was tapping S-O-S on her glass and did not know if she needed help or not.
Mary Jane, taken hostage by the conscience of Moria McTaggert in her necklace, leaves the Gala and Parker tries to follow but is stopped by Wolverine. It is revealed that Parker was having his mind read by Emma Frost as Wolverine comes through one of the portals and tosses Parker his Spider suit.
On the other side of the portal Moria and a group of soldiers are waiting. Moria uses mind control and the necklace around Mary Janes throat to force her to comply. Meanwhile, Parker and Wolverine use Gateway to teleport to the same location without using the portal. Together Wolverine and Parker fight off the soldiers leaving Parker agitated that Wolverine wants to wait for a location to be found.
Moria arrives at a church where she attempts to kill Mary Jane with the necklace but is attacked by Greycrow who was tracking them. Parker and Wolverine fight off the remaining soldiers but Moria’s conscience in a robotic hand is able to reassemble itself to the body waiting. Parker is able to use an emp device that injures her forcing her to teleport away. Mary Jane and Parker are back in at the portal and Parker tries to get Mary Jane to go talk with him like old times. Mary Jane tells Parker that it is responsibility that keeps her and Parker apart.
Honestly, I only picked this one up because it continued a part of the Hellfire Gala but I’m happy that I did. I thoroughly enjoyed this issue and can’t really think of any downsides. Zeb Wells writing flows like water from panel to panel and the art style of Patrick Gleason is excellent. I think if you’re a Spider-Man fan or Wolverine fan you won’t come away dissatisfied with this team up. I would definitely recommend this issue to pick up.
Godzilla Vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 5 -
Goldar, Scorpina, and the Rangers are doing what they can, but it seems that King Ghidorah is an opponent that they have never faced before and are barely holding on. The Green Ranger, having defeated a group of Xiliens is able to rejoin the battle in his Dagonzord. Pushing Ghidorah back towards the ocean, Godzilla rises out of the ocean and drags Ghidorah under water.
As the two titans battle under water the Dragonzord and the Megazord come toghether to form the Mega Dragonzord. Goldar and Scorpina teleport away just as Godzilla and Ghidorah emerge from underwater. With a full power blast from the Rangers and a breath attack from Godzilla they defeat the mighty King Ghidorah. Still angry Godzilla turns his attention to the Xiliens and Rita Repulsa. After being attacked she teleports into a multiverse stream leaving the Rangers and Godzilla. The Rangers, however, quickly call for Zordon to teleport them home. Rita Repulsa continues to fall through the multiverse seeing Rangers or Godzilla in every reality she looks.
This issue was really fun read. The Power Rangers and Godzilla team up is fantastic. I loved seeing two childhood icons teaming up in one of the most unlikely of team ups. The writing by Cullen Bunn and the art of Freddie E. Williams II combine to make me feel like I was watching the whole thing unfold on a weekend morning. The pure amount of just fun this issue brings to the table cannot be understated and if you’re a fan of either or just want a fun monster smash book you can’t go wrong here.
Midnight Suns Issue 1 -
At Strange Acadamy Blade is a guest teacher for defense against vampires. Magik opens a portal, and it seems vampires are about to join the class. In the hallway after the lesson three students are walking when Zoe Laveau faints. A vision of darkness and horror and the apocalypse engulf everyone at the school, and it would seem anyone with an affinity for magic or the supernatural.
All of the students begin to surround Zoe as Doctor Voodoo tries to get her to come with him and the other instructors, she turns to run but Magik opens a portal with Wolverine in front of her. Another student attempts to grab her for the headmaster her necklace is ripped off, ending the illusion spell that made her appear human. They are attacked suddenly by creatures made of vapor, the same creatures from the vision before. Oe of the creatures attempts to get to Zoe telling her she was chosen before Spirit Rider appears. With the combined efforts of Wolverine, Blade, Magik, Nicco, and Spirit Rider, Professor Harkness is able to transport Zoe and herself away. Once away the vapor monsters dissipate leaving their dead human victims of possession in their wake.
Nicco is able to get the help of fairies to cast a spell to show her from the vision. On her watch is the date, and the apocalypse is just four days away. Unfortunately for them that is only one of their current problems as Doctor Doom teleports in and demands they hand over Zoe.
This issue is setting a lot up to happen, and I don’t think it’s ambitious enough. There is a lot of moving parts in this story from the start and it hits all the marks for me. Ethan Sacks’ writing weaves a tight story with plenty of room to move around and the art of Luigi Zagaria teams up splendidly to create a fantastic vision. With this being the first issue, I don’t want to gush too much yet, but I feel like this has a ton of potential to be one of the best runs for the Midnight Suns yet. If you haven't picked up this issue yet, go get it.
Thank you for your support and patience. I am going to try and move the posting date for these back to Fridays or Thursdays to be available for the weekends. Also, I hope to begin branching out some and breakdown full arc or entire story breakdowns soon.
